We link volunteers with residents and families to help promote quality of life for residents in long-term care facilities. We also help train and encourage caregivers to promote the quality of life of residents in long-term care facilities.

Over 1.4 million people live in long-term care facilities. This figure is expected to be close to 12 million within the next four years. It is estimated that over 40 percent of this population is at or below the national poverty level and over 33 percent have been diagnosed with depression. 
 Over the last decade, I have had the privilege to serve hundreds of individuals living in long-term care facilities. It did not take me long to identify that many of these individuals had little to no family involvement or support. I quickly began to see these individuals sink into a life of 
depression and even anger as they felt unloved and hopeless.

I have since discovered what literally a few hours and a few dollars a month can

do to significantly impact the lives of these individuals.

Dola's Dollars

Imagine living in a long-term care facility with only sixty dollars or even less a month for personal needs.  This is the reality of most individuals in long-term care facilities.  

Dola's Dollars is an initiative, which seeks to provide individuals living in long-term care facilities access to additional spending money.  Residents are given money for things such as activities and personal items.  This small monetary contribution, on a routine basis, can help improve their enjoyment of life in the facility.

Ms. Dola Cleveland was a resident who was very near and dear to my heart.  Anytime you saw Ms. Dola, she always had her coin purse at hand, ready to place an order for a burger, fries, and a coke, or just about any "good" food.  It was with these few dollars each month that she was able to use to continue enjoying life at the nursing home.
